1. Start with the system, not one number
Wheelset weight is easy to compare, but it cannot establish suitability on its own. Consider equipped rider weight, bike type, terrain, tyres, usual speed and whether you prioritise response, damping, durability or ease of repair.
2. Define your actual riding
For XC and marathon, low weight and response may deserve priority. Trail, enduro and e-bikes place greater emphasis on control, impacts and system margin. If you mix disciplines, the most useful choice is usually the one that covers your rides as a whole rather than the most extreme single figure.
3. Match rim and tyre
Internal width should be considered alongside the tyre size and casing you intend to use. The current MADGOAT range declares a 31 mm internal width for Balance, FLY and Balance Extreme. Always respect the specific compatibility and limits of both rim and tyre.
4. Choose spokes and hubs with servicing in mind
Sapim CX-Ray is ZAMBRA’s default steel recommendation. MADGOAT FLY uses carbon spokes in its standard build. Balance Extreme comes with CX-Ray and ERASE Straightpull hubs. A combination outside the configurator is checked for compatibility, availability, price and lead time before confirmation.
5. Three starting points within MADGOAT
MADGOAT Balance combines proprietary geometry, a 31 mm internal width and a 1,187 g reference build. MADGOAT FLY starts at 930 g and suits riders prioritising low weight and direct response. Balance Extreme shares the Balance geometry in a reinforced construction; its 1,500 g reference build is aimed at enduro and e-bikes. These are programmed-build references, not guaranteed final weights for every wheelset.
6. Ask for a record of the completed build
Actual weight is known once the wheelset has been built. The ZAMBRA Quality Passport records its configuration and assembly checks. Pack Precisión, included as standard, is separate: it balances each wheel’s mass with its final valves and does not replace truing or spoke-tension work in the standard build.
7. A short checklist before choosing
Summarise your equipped weight, discipline, terrain, tyres, bike and what you want to improve over your current wheels. That allows equivalent builds to be compared without choosing from a single headline.
